This course investigates the relationships between humans and animals. Topics covered include care of pets, our relationships with wild animals in zoos and in the wild, ethical issues involving animals
Intensive Theme Description:
Students visit with animal care professions, including vets and trainers. Students visit organizations such as the Raptor Center, the University of Minnesota School of Veterinary Medicine, a local dairy farm and the Minnesota Zoo. Students undertake a 7-day project with their own pets in which they document their care of the pet and work to “untrain” a problematic behavior. Students choose, research and discuss issues related to the ethical treatment of animals.
Students who wish to participate in this intensive theme should:
Be interested in the care and handling of animals
Perhaps be a pet owner, or hope to be a pet owner some day
